Celebrate July Disability Pride Month

Disability Unite July Events - Information & FAQ's

New York Citywide Events

Spanning all five boroughs of NYC, Disability Pride Month gives us the opportunity for our communities to come together in pride and unite in power. The month also spreads awareness and educates allies about disability rights as civil rights – including disability culture and access accommodations. Let’s continue to embody the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act and create a NYC that is a global center for disability pride, arts and culture, and inclusive businesses!

Disability Unite, the 504 Democratic Club, Project Access for All, and Art Beyond Sight warmly invite New York’s elected officials, disability advocates, and community members to come together for a joyful, moving, and history-making gathering.

Join Comptroller Brad Lander, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, Council Leaders, Albany legislators, and disability leaders including Dr. Sharon McLennon-Weir, Center for Indepence of the Disabled, to celebrate a decade of official recognition of Disability Pride Month in NYC—and launch a month of powerful community events including the Disability Unite Festival events, 35 years of the ADA, 40 years of Disability Representation in Media Week including celebrating 400 years of disabled people as part of New York City history.

In 2015, longtime advocate Mike Schweinsburg led the successful campaign to have July officially recognized as Disability Pride Month in NYC. On his birthday, July 1st, he received the proclamation from MOPD Commissioner Victor Calise and Mayor Bill de Blasio—an unforgettable gift that marked a historic milestone. This year, Mike will share that historical proclamation with the community, as we celebrate his continued birthday gift: the 10th anniversary of Disability Pride in New York City.
